About
Hugo Daouk is a German-Lebanese composer of contemporary concert music. His work is shaped by an interest in musical structure, time, and cultural context, with a particular focus on processes of repetition and transformation. Unconventional approaches to duration and form play an important role in his compositions.
A significant part of his recent work engages with intercultural perspectives, especially the relationship between Western contemporary music and Arabic classical music. Rather than treating these traditions as fixed categories, his music examines how different musical and cultural practices can influence each other within a single compositional framework.
Alongside his work as a composer, Hugo Daouk maintains an active instrumental practice. He studied piano and performs the riq (arabic tambourine), as well as the nay (arabic flute) and other frame drums, including the ocean drum. This practice informs his compositional thinking, in how musical details from different traditions can be translated in a multicultural setting.
In addition to composing, he has several years of experience teaching ear training, music theory, and piano, and will offer courses in these subjects as well as in music history and riq starting in 2026.
His music has been performed by ensembles such as the Schallfeld Ensemble and presented at festivals including the Limina Festival. Performances have taken place in venues such as Haus Marteau, Salzburg Cathedral, the Bösendorfersaal, and other concert spaces.
Born in 2001 in Sonneberg, Germany, Hugo Daouk grew up in Coburg with regular stays in Beirut. In 2022, he studied composition at the Mozarteum University Salzburg with Christian Ofenbauer, where he was awarded several academic scholarships for excellence. He currently lives and works in Germany.
